The first time my dad ever went to Hawaii, he came back loving smoothies more than anyone had ever loved smoothies. As he told me, “I had a smoothie in Hawaii and now I just love smoothies.” Makes sense, what with all the tropical fruits and stuff.

Over the course of the next few months, my dad really got in to smoothies. He had books. He had mixes. He started buying fresh fruit. He had a special blender with a spout for easy smoothie dispensing. There’s no way to know for sure, but at that time, I think he might have liked smoothies more than anyone else in the world.

It was about a year later that I asked him about that first smoothie in Hawaii and where he got it. His response: “Jamba Juice.”
