When I was 13, “Liar Liar” might have been my favorite movie because I was a 13-year-old idiot. It’s either that or the first Austin Powers for best movie of 1997 in my book. Can’t believe neither of those took home Best Picture at that year’s Oscars.
Anyway, that line up there — “It has to be!” — has bugged me at least once a week since 1997, despite the fact that I’m a grown-up now. And that’s because there are two very different ways of reading in to the line.
Either Jim Carrey is saying “It HAS to be,” as in this makes total sense and it is logical that holding your pee would hurt your boner status. Or he’s saying “It has to be,” because everyone is aware that he is incapable of lying on that particular day. Both readings fit with the story and work in this context.
In conclusion, I worry about very important things.
